Tottenham Squad Analysis Part One Introduction and Goalkeepers

Last Sunday I woke early in a feverish anticipation and, after pulling on my Spurs shirt and grabbing a quick breakfast, settled in on the train for the long journey that awaited me. In hindsight, I wish I hadnt bothered. I had, of course, a ticket to our Wembley cup clash against Celtic. The glo sy, official 5 program billed a pa sionate Joe Thomas Jersey England vs. Scotland affair whilst the man over the tannoy kept informing the crowd how pa sions were running high. What utter rubbish. The game was awful; Spurs were sluggish and seemingly uninterested whilst the Celtic team, despite triumphing 2-0, showed little skill and seemed content with playing on the break. True, the game was only a pre-season friendly but after paying good money to watch, youd expect the players to put in just a little bit of effort.I thought playing here would fill anyone with a bit of inspiration. Apparantly not. However, this fortunately isnt a post about our disastrous Wembley Cup campaign, as frankly I have neither the time nor the heart to detail our lo s. No, this is a post concerning the Tottenham Hotspur first team squad. For the match program contained the usual player profiles and manager interview, but also included a small section with club captain and permanently injured Ledley King (who, needle s to say, crocked himself after giving an interview in which he said he couldnt wait to play in the Wembley Cup). In the interview, King spoke of his desire to finish as high up in the league as po sible, and also of his conviction that Spurs would have a great season. Not long after, Robbie Keane told journalists how he expected Spurs to break the top four, with Jermaine Jenas telling newspapers of his similar expectations. And this got me wondering. Wondering how deluded our squad really is. Last season we narrowly avoided relegation. True, after Arrys arrival we steadily pulled up the table and narrowly mi sed out on Europa League Qualification but this was only due to the close point gap between the relegation places and 8 th or 9 th place. I dont expect Spurs to be fighting relegation come Christmas this season Greg Joseph Jersey but I do feel the club have to drastically lower their expectations. The 4th place opportunity has come and gone, after some dodgy lasagne cost us our place in the UEFA Champions League. Now, that elusive position is blocked by a multitude of better teams: Arsenal- who despite their small squad will certainly finish above us once again. Manchester City- whose millions have gifted them a mouth-watering squad capable of finishing higher than their bitter city rivals, that is of course, if the newly a sembled squad gel. Everton- whose tight unit saw them finish as F.A Cup runners up, and Aston Villa, led by one of the best managers in the world- in my humble opinion.Despite having a large squad our team remains vulnerable in certain positions. Sure, we have probably the best collection of right -backs in the Premiership but we look incredibly weak in the centre-back position with our three best central defenders, Dawson, Woodgate and King all injured, the latter two seemingly destined to remain injury-prone. The left hand side is also a weak area, and one that drastically needs to be addre sed. In the following three articles I will review our defenders, mid-fielders and attackers, offering my opinion on who we need and who needs to be given their marching orders. Below I will review our goalkeepers and, like always, I hope you post your opinions below.#1. HEURELHO GOMESThis shot pretty much sums up Gomes Tottenham start.Wow, where to start. After joining from PSV to replace Paul Robinson people were hopeful. In hindsight, maybe they were too hopeful. For a couple of years Robinson had been steadfast at the back, and Spurs fans rejoiced in singing Englands Englands Number One! whenever Robbo pulled off a good save. He even scored! OK, it was a bit of a fluky punt up field but it was more than Teemu Tainio ever did. But then Robinson played in THAT Croatia game and his career when downhill quicker than Darren Bents value after his first season at Spurs. The previously confident keeper looked nervous, flapping at corners and letting in tame goals. BMJ (Jol) kept the faith in Englands (former) number one, but when Juande Ramos joined it became apparent that his days were numbered.Gomes early days were the stuff nightmares were made off. Arsenal fans had a field day whenever Gomes let a tame shot in (which was much too often) and you could argue the Brazilians poor form was one of the main factors in Ramos eventual sacking. However after Arrys arrival Gomes was a man po se sed. Gone were the days after furious nail-biting every time the opposition entered our half. Gone were the days of embarra sing cock-ups and through-the-body goals. Heurelho was suddenly in the form of his life Gary Brightwell Jersey , diving full stretch to deny numerous opposition attackers and nearly setting a club clean sheet record. It seemed like Gomes had paid his worth. With the season not far from kicking off, doubts are once again beginning to circulate regarding Gomes ability. True, he might show flashes of brilliance but he is incredibly eccentric. He seemed to perform better when he had some serious competition (in the shape of Cudicini), prompting many fans to believe he should remain at the club, but only if another goalie can be bought when Cudicini eventually slows down.SHOULD HE STAY? Yes. He might be error prone but, on his day, Gomes is one of the best goalies in the Premiership and he is worthy of his place in the team.SQUAD RATING: 8 (out of 10).#23. CARLO CUDICINIIve always had a soft spot for Carlo Cudicini. A few years ago I was one of his biggest fans and I couldnt believe Chelsea were in the market for another stopper, eventually bringing in Petr Cech. True, he has lost a bit of agility with age but hes still a capable replacement for Gomes. However, as discu sed above, Gomes performs better when faced with some serious competition, and Cudicini isnt on the top of his game anymore. Neverthele s hes a good squad player and would cover for Gomes well if the Brazilian got injured, which is one of the main reasons Arry signed him- after Gomes mi sed a few matches in January.Cudicini provides some experienceIts highly likely that Carlo will play out his days at the Lane, and I hope he does. Whilst its hard to see him being anything more than a number three within a couple of seasons, I think it would be a good idea to sign the Italian up as a goalkeeper coach, should he want a future in the game, as he was one of the best goalkeepers of the early 2000s. A shrewd signing by Harry, and a good number two (for another season at least).SHOULD HE STAY? Yes, though only for another season. After that we should seek to bring in a better number two or put our faith in young Alnwick. We could always sign Cudicini up as a coach or player-coach though.SQUAD RATING: 6.5#27. BEN ALNWICKStill a youngster and has made just one appearance for Spurs. He has made two appearances for the England U21s and has been loaned out four times whilst at Spurs, all to Championship or Coca-Cola League One clubs. At 22, youd now expect him to be banging on the Greedy Williams Jersey door to a first team appearance, but Redknapp seems content with loaning him to other clubs. And, at the minute, I think thats the right decision. Alnwick isnt better than Cudicini yet (but hopefully will be come this time next year) and, barring all but the worst of injury crisis, he wont be needed at the club next year.Apart from the odd lapse, Alnwicks career change from wrestling to football is so far going well.Alnwick has shown a bit of promise in various games, he was brilliant against us whilst playing for Sunderland in 2005 and impre sed during his Carlisle loan spell, and will hopefully come on leaps and bounds in the future. Obviously, I cant offer a complete opinion on him as I have seen so little of him, so well just have to have faith in the club that they will give him his chance in due course. He wasnt exactly brilliant during his only senior game for Spurs; he was in goal as we lost 3-2 to Burnley, but, in fairne s, the whole team were poor on that occasion.SHOULD HE STAY? Of course. Hes still young and has plenty of time to work on his weakne ses, and we shouldnt be getting rid of our more promising youngsters. Let us not forget that with most keepers playing until their mid thirties, Alnwick is still a very young stopper.SQUAD RATING: 6#TBC. OSCAR JANSSONYou might not have yet heard of him, but in a few years Jan son Giovanni Ricci Jersey could well be Tottenhams number one (providing he learns where his goal is).Little is known of the Swedish goalkeeper, but rumour has it that hes one of the clubs most promising young players. Bought from his hometown club Karlsund HFK (a Swedish league side) Jan son was immediately played in the under 18 squad, before pushing his way into the reserve squad, despite having been at the club for only a few months. He was named goalkeeper of the tournament in a under 19s competition whilst playing for Spurs and played for the senior team in friendlys against Leyton Orient and AS Roma. Last season was a more quiet one for the Swede, as he made a few more appearances for the reserves, but if you believe the hype, it seems Tottenham have one of the most promising goalies around on their hands. And hes still only 19.SHOULD HE STAY? Definitely. Jan son looks to be a very promising player and is exciting a few of the coaches at the club. After being plucked from total obscurity, if Jan son turned out to be a gem the Tottenham scouts would have done a fine job. I would keep him at the club for another year, playing him in the reserves and maybe giving him a Carling Cup outing, before loaning him out next year to a League Two/League One side.SQUAD RATING: 4 (though this will no doubt improve as he gets older).
