Oracle International Language Institute specializes in training students and professionals on Chinese communication skills, cultural insights, and career-related knowledge via its unique curriculum that blends modern teaching methods with student/professional needs.

This course will strengthen all four communication skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking. Emphasis will be placed on studying authentic materials relevant to business as well as engaging in discussions conducted entirely in Chinese.

Introduction

This course aims to develop advanced-level proficiency among its participants in all four communication skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). It primarily targets cultivating practical communicative competence for use in China-related fields like business, education or public service.

Students' reading comprehension and writing abilities in Chinese will be enhanced through engaging with contemporary sociocultural topics pertinent to today's China and discussing them while reading contemporary characters alongside traditional ones in an authentic written and spoken context. The focus will also be placed on using both modern characters with traditional ones for seamless writing/speaking language use.

Examines literary works from the Tang dynasty and beyond, including poetry, drama and prose. Emphasizes classical literary forms and styles as well as adaptations in Chinese-speaking world. Undergrad students must gain written permission of instructor; not open for credit by students who have completed 651 or 501.

Grammar

Course objectives are to strengthen students' grammatical comprehension, enhance written composition skills and cultivate speaking ability using modern Chinese literature as course material. Prerequisite: Two third-year level Chinese classes or permission of instructor

Introduce students to China's culture, history and legends, geography, ethical values and social transformation via lively narratives. Text material covers both traditional characters as well as simplified ones from end of elementary level (120a). Emphasis is placed on close examination of grammar, diction and style while conversation classes and composition exercises may also be implemented.

Students learn to articulate feelings and opinions clearly and concisely, create informational narratives and compare viewpoints using level-appropriate vocabulary. Furthermore, they develop greater grammatical accuracy while reading extended narrative, expository and simple argumentative passages easily - ideal for heritage speakers as well as students with uneven Chinese proficiency who seek to develop writing and reading proficiency. This course caters to heritage speakers as well as others requiring assistance in improving writing and reading ability.

Vocabulary

A key goal of this course is to expand students' vocabulary and ability to decipher compound words, with greater emphasis placed on grammar structure and decipherment. A significant amount of time will also be dedicated to reading authentic materials with cultural connotations - such as narratives or expository passages - while continuing to strengthen reading comprehension abilities while expanding writing capabilities such as personal narratives, informational narratives, comparative and descriptive essays, or simple argumentative essays.

This advanced Chinese course aims to strengthen students' overall aural-oral proficiency while gradually transitioning them into written Chinese. Students will also gain more in-depth knowledge of Chinese culture and society from readings, as well as building upon previous reading and aural-oral skills and abilities, with explorations beyond what could be found in Snapshots of China (co-written by Hua-yuan Li Mowry and Yuhui Lyu). Students should express feelings and opinions in relative length as well as be prepared to understand and discuss alternative viewpoints.

Listening

Goal of this course is to raise students' speaking, listening, reading and writing levels of proficiency in Modern Standard Chinese. Class hours include five fifty-five-minute sessions with the master teacher as well as conversation sessions as well as weekly exams, writing assignments, oral presentations and outside work assigned outside class.

This course is tailored towards students who have some knowledge of daily life in China but minimal abilities in speaking, writing and reading Chinese. Emphasis will be given to developing speaking and listening proficiency as well as readings covering socio-cultural topics. Students will learn basic written Chinese as well as grammatical rules; additionally they will begin exploring fundamental differences between traditional and simplified Chinese characters.

Continue to strengthen students' overall aural-oral proficiency by increasing discourse length on more challenging socio-cultural topics; provide vocabulary and patterns necessary for conducting semi-formal or formal discussions and arguments; enable students to solve textual problems at a higher level of complexity, expanding writing abilities to personal narratives, expository passages, and simple argumentative essays as well as begin studying basic Chinese historical syntax and phonology.

Speaking

Advanced students looking to hone their speaking abilities. Students will participate in various conversational tasks while honing their description and narration abilities in Chinese.

Focusing on authentic and relevant Chinese materials related to economics - essays, dialogues, business cases, newspaper reading, audio-visual material - this course explores China's economic rise as a world power, its long history, and distinct culture.

This course, intended for high school-level Chinese learners in their fourth year, aims to enhance all four communication skills. As part of a highly intensive learning experience, a maximum of four sixty-five minute sessions each week with the master teacher, two fifty-minute drill and conversation sessions weekly as well as weekly exams, midterm, and final examinations will be included as part of this intensive program. Prerequisite for enrollment must be at least C- in CHINESE 111-3 or equivalent course and repeatable up to six credits hours.
